Posted about 3 years ago by Jean Aertker, DNP, APRN, FAANP
Many have heard of the Nightingale Tribute created several years ago by Kansas ANA nurse member Duane Jaunger RN, MSN to honor a deceased nurse colleague by performing the Nightingale Tribute at the funeral or memorial service. Adding to this special event now areNurse Honor Guards which have formed around the country since 2019 and pays tribute to the nurse at the time of their death.
This service is similar to a military tribute and officially and publicly thanks the nurse for their service and releases the nurse from their nursing duties. ... It is not difficult or expensive to start a Nurses Honor Guard, who attend services usually dressed in traditional white uniform, don the school cap and white shoes and perhaps wear the blue and red nurses cape. Others simply when gather to attend a nurses funeral or memorial service and present the nightingale tribute readings. These unique and endearing service includes the presentation of white roses symbolic of the nurses’ service. A few of the Honor Guard groups have organized within hospitals, and within in nursing associations or churches. Some have created non for profit organizations for volunteers to serve.
You-Tube has several videos up showing this special ceremony and several websites provide the script and order of the ceremony. Please share this and let other know how special it is to honor our colleagues!
